Pico Walk: The Youth of Pico

11 AM – 1 PM
Please meet at the SW corner of 17th and Delaware.

This walk will focus on organizing work in the Pico neighborhood on issues related gang violence, policing, and education. Leaders from the Pico Youth and Family Center will discuss different organizing projects over the years, including the Vigil for Peace and Mothers for Justice. Representatives may include Maria Loya, Alex Aldana, and Oscar de la Torre. Olla Mitchell from the Parent Connection Group, and the Venice/Santa Monica chapters of the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women will also be present to share about her work to support education campaigns in support of youth of color in particular. Please meet at the SW corner of 17th and Delaware.

This walk will invite community historian Jaime Cruz and long-time business owner Henry Bañuelos to lead us through different historic eras of Olympic Blvd, including its current manifestation. By remembering the old Mexican Business district that once existed, meeting other long-time residents, and discussing issues like policing and gentrification, we will hear from theirs and your experiences across time.  Meet outside of Main gallery of 18th Street Arts Center. Pico Walk: We Are Family

Meet outside the entrance of Edison Elementary
2402 Virginia Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90404

This walk will invite local artist Paulina Sahagun and community historian Robbie Jones to describe their experiences growing up in the neighborhood and the work they have done as adults to keep that history alive and share it with others. The walk will discuss multiracial solidarity and reflect on the Black and Brown character of the neighborhood in general. Meet outside of front entrance of Edison Elementary. The walk will end at the Woodlawn cemetery – please plan accordingly.
