Make Jazz Fellow Marquis Hill at Blue Whale
Marquis Hill and friends
Blue Whale
123 Astronaut E S Onizuka St Suite 301, LA, CA 90012
show starts at 9pm
Marquis Hill, rising trumpeter-composer and band-leader joins the 18th Street Arts Center as current Make Jazz Fellow. He and his ensemble will hold forth afresh at LA’s premiere jazz club, Blue Whale, on February 16, 2015.
In the first month of his residency, Hill will actively consider compositional and performance concepts for which he is becoming known. Extending oral storytelling traditions, resourceful personality, and community will bounce as one. Let melody equal exploratory line–harmony, deepening color: Hill and his mates will wonder aloud, “How might rhythm unite timbre and time, creators and crowd–tonight?”
This show will feature new pieces, re-considered works, as well as reveal something of Hill’s process – with both new and old collaborators.
Marquis Hill will be joined by Christian Euman on drums, Jonathan Roberts on bass, Jeff Parker on guitar, and Josh Johnson on alto saxophone.
