John Ellis, 18th Street Arts Center‘s current Make Jazz Fellow, tenor saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, will present a master class in conjunction with Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.

In the first month of his residency, Ellis has been refocusing on his small group concept, pushing the boundaries of mood and gesture in an ensemble of 4 or 5 voices. As always, he delves into narrative and story exploring the possibilities through the time and space of a set, of an evening. Ellis experiments with the different innate expressive potential of various instruments alone and in combinations.
