We Were in Santa Monica is a new musical work inspired by and in tandem with the 18SAC Broadway Project, illuminating and celebrating the vibrant Black community that once existed in Santa Monica, California. What happened to said community echoes what has happened and continues to happen to several black communities all over the United States. We Were in Santa Monica aims to shed light on a critically understated part of Los Angeles history and hopes to inspire its spectators to reevaluate the roles we are playing in the history we are allowing to be made today.

Happening once monthly at 18th Street Arts Center's Propeller Gallery, artist Jenny Yurshansky will host two simultaneous workshops related to her solo exhibition Rinsing the Bones. Participants will work with the artist to explore how our migration stories offer us paths for understanding our own histories, places of origin, and how that impacts our sense of belonging and identity.

Join us for the launch of Artful Watching, a special series of outdoor film screenings exploring the rich history and cultural treasures of Santa Monica. 

We’re kicking the series off with We Were All Here by local artists Dan Kwong and Paulina Sahagun. Weaving together the personal and the political through oral histories, historical and family photos, poetry, music and a sprinkling of irreverent humor, the film honors the multicultural history of the unique Pico Neighborhood of Santa Monica.
