Short Film Screening | Related to Re-Homing Instincts
June 15, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Airport Campus, 3026 Airport Ave. Santa Monica, CA 90405 Join Frida Cano, curator of Re-Homing Instincts and California Lawyers for the Arts Designing Creative Futures Communication Intern Arthur James for a 20-minute screening of the four films shot and directed by Arthur James.
When I first embarked on the journey of conceptualizing the Re-Homing Instincts short documentaries, my primary focus was to uncover a profound yet often overlooked bond shared by the women participating in the exhibition. Beyond their shared experience of adapting to life in a foreign land, I sought to discover a genuine and hidden connection. Collaborating with exhibitions curator Frida Cano, we had an epiphany that the ocean itself served as a unifying force, symbolizing the arduous voyage these women undertook to reach this new land, only to encounter unforeseen complexities and discomfort. My aim was to shed light on this concept, infusing it with a surreal ambiance that offers a glimpse into the profound sensations one experiences when both body and spirit find themselves in a state of unease. Rather than shying away from this discomfort, I wanted to explore the idea of embracing it. Central to my vision was to establish a tangible link between an immigrant’s spirit and their struggle to find solace in an unfamiliar environment. Hence, the concept of having each woman recline upon rugged rocks to visually represent this notion. The overall tone and atmosphere were crafted to evoke a dreamlike realm, where storytelling transcends the confines of literal interpretation, allowing for the conveyance of abstract ideas and emotions that resonate with all humans. Through this approach, I aimed to highlight the remarkable beauty and resilience exhibited by each of these women, as they courageously take a leap of faith in pursuit of a brighter future—one marked by change, acceptance, and peace. Ultimately, it is through this transformative journey that our souls begin to heal from the traumas that anchor us, caused by the discomfort of a new home.
