Network and Show is a curatorial workshop facilitated by Mary Anna Pomonis, co-founder of the Association of Hysteric Curators, along with Allison Stewart. This one-day workshop will take you through the process of creating a “Vision Map” for your art career. The workshop will help you devise a strategy to network with other artists, curators, and writers by curating an ideal group exhibition surrounding the themes of your artwork. Building this imaginary group exhibition will help you design a map for success to help you actualize the next steps in your professional career as an artist. By visualizing your work next to the work of other artists, you will develop a game plan to connect yourself to artists who make work that aligns with your practice. This process will help you position yourself as a creator within a larger art community both thematically and conceptually.
First, you will share your ideal exhibition design with the rest of the class and collaboratively brainstorm a group show that fuses themes and interests that overlap between participants in an imaginary group show. The final step will be to collaborate on writing an exhibition statement for the group, as well as an accompanying press release with images of participating artists. The final stage will involve writing an email and an elevator pitch about the group exhibition. Finally, use what you learned from the group brainstorming process to adapt your idea and write an email and elevator pitch for your group-show concept based on the themes in your work.
