Arts Learning Lab @ Home: “Your Musical Family Tree” with Paul Cornish
Saturday, February 20th @ 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Join Paul Cornish, jazz musician and composer and our latest Make Jazz Fellow, and explore your family lineage through music. Participants will sketch their own family tree and use it as inspiration to create songs and sounds of their own. This workshop will be presented in English and simultaneously interpreted in Spanish. All ages are welcome, and families are encouraged to join in together!

Materials: Pencil, paper, and an instrument (or pots and pans, sticks, containers, cardboard tubes, rattles)

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Los Angeles based composer and pianist Paul Cornish strives to inspire freedom and collaboration in his music and community. Recently graduated from the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, he has been making waves in the Los Angeles music scene performing regularly at premier venues around the city. He was a recipient of the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s 2020 New Note Commission and was recently awarded the 18th Street Arts Center’s 2021 Make Jazz Fellowship. He was also the grand prize winner of the 2018 American Jazz Piano Competition. Growing up in Houston, Texas and attending the world-renowned High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Paul follows a lineage of top pianists from Houston such as Jason Moran, Robert Glasper, Helen Sung, and James Francies. 

ABOUT ARTS LEARNING LAB @ HOME

Arts Learning Lab @ Home is a series of free online arts classes for kids and families schooling from home. These hands-on artmaking workshops are held live on Zoom and are posted as on-demand videos after each workshop. Led by a diverse group of professional artists in residence at 18th Street as well as members of our national and international artist community, ALL@Home strives to feature arts making workshops in a range of mediums, skills, and with the core belief that the arts help us imagine new futures, create empathy, and promote community resilience. Workshops are offered on a quarterly basis.

 


Laboratorio de Arte y Aprendizaje en Casa: “Tu árbol de familia musical” con Paul Cornish

Acompaña a Paul Cornish, músico y compositor de jazz y nuestro último Make Jazz Fellow  y explora tu linaje familiar a través de la música. Los participantes dibujarán su propio árbol genealógico y lo utilizarán como inspiración para crear canciones y sonidos propios. Este taller será presentado en inglés y simultáneamente interpretado en español.  ¡Todas las edades son bienvenidas, y se anima a las familias a participar!

Materiales: Lápiz, papel y un instrumento (o ollas y sartenes, palos, contenedores, tubos de cartón, matracas

SOBRE EL ARTISTA
El compositor y pianista de Los Angeles Paul Cornish se esfuerza por inspirar libertad y colaboración en su música y comunidad. Recientemente graduado del Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance en UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, ha estado haciendo olas en la escena musical de Los Angeles tocando regularmente en lugares de primer nivel alrededor de la ciudad. Recibió la New Note Commission 2020 de Los Angeles Jazz Society y recientemente fue galardonado con la beca Make Jazz de 2021 del 18th Street Arts Center. También fue el ganador del gran premio del Concurso Americano de Piano Jazz de 2018. Creciendo en Houston, Texas y asistiendo a la High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, cual es conocida mundialmente, Paul sigue un linaje de los mejores pianistas de Houston como Jason Moran, Robert Glasper, Helen Sung y James Francies.

SOBRE EL LABORATORIO DE ARTE Y APRENDIZAJE EN CASA:
Laboratorio de Arte y Aprendizaje en Casa es una serie de clases gratuitas de artes por internet para niñxs y familias que llevan a cabo estudios desde casa. Estos talleres prácticos de arte se llevan a cabo en vivo en Zoom y se publican como videos bajo demanda después de cada taller. Dirigido por un grupo diverso de artistas profesionales en residencia en 18th Street Arts Center, así como miembros de nuestra comunidad nacional e internacional de artistas, Laboratorio de Arte y Aprendizaje en Casa se esfuerza por ofrecer talleres de artes en una variedad de medios, habilidades y con la creencia central de que las artes nos ayudan a imaginar nuevos futuros, crear empatía y promover la resiliencia de la comunidad.
