18th Street Arts Center and Brentwood Art Center are pleased to invite you to a free community workshop and reception with Taiwanese visiting artist Pei-Yu Lee as part of their new partnership. This inaugural event is presented in conjunction with a three-month residency supported by the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan, and the Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles, the artist will lead a free hands-on art making workshop for the public at the Brentwood Art Center. Objects from the workshop will be incorporated into a participatory installation in the artist’s live-work studio at 18th Street Arts Center.
Workshop participants are invited to create a votive inspired by the shape of their own homes, using locally sourced soil from land that was once inhabited by Tongva Native Americans (People of the Earth), and mixed with ball clay sediment. Participants are asked to bring photos of their houses to use as inspiration for their clay vessels. At the closing of the installation, the clay vessels will be placed back into the land from which the soil was borrowed, where they will disintegrate back into the land over time. Lee is interested in how sites associated with the first inhabitants of Los Angeles have become contested as housing developments have grown across the west side. The work develops themes from previous installations using polluted earth that the artist has created in Taiwan, such as “Come Eat Dust Together” (2016).
Votives created by workshop participants will be on view at 18th Street Arts Center on Monday, September 17 and Tuesday, September 18, when 18th Street will host a public reception for the artist and workshop participants along with the public and invited guests. The event will include remarks from 18th Street Arts Center and Taiwan Academy staff welcoming Pei-Yu Lee.
