Learn the delicate and mindful craft of traditional paper flower-making with artisan Carmela Morales. This workshop will introduce participants to the eco friendly practice of using recyclable materials and traditional art skills to create beautiful flowers that can be gifted to your favorite person or used to decorate your home. Discover how you can take care of your mental health through this meditative task and make new friendships along the way! Concerned by all the plastic waste found in the environment, Carmela wants to revive the traditional practice of using recyclable paper to create decor. As you take care of your self, you’ll be taking care of your environment through this cultural practice.

Materials: 1 sheet of dark green crepe paper (50cm X 200 cm ), 2 sheets of colored crepe paper (50cm X 200 cm), 1 clear glue pen, 1 piece of cardboard shaped as a circle (12 inches), 1 strip of ribbon (5 cm), scissors*

*These items will be available for pick-up in an art kit at 18th Street’s Santa Monica campus. We will send details once you register for the workshop. If you will not be able to pick up, you can collect these materials at home in advance.

Aprende la delicada y atenta artesanía de la elaboración tradicional de flores de papel.

Explora la tradición artesanal mexicana de flores de papel con la artesana Carmela Morales. Este taller presentará a los participantes a la práctica ecológica de utilizar materiales reciclables y habilidades artísticas tradicionales para crear hermosas flores que pueden ser regaladas a su persona favorita o utilizadas para decorar su hogar. ¡Descubre cómo puedes cuidar tu salud mental a través de esta tarea meditativa y haz nuevas amistades al mismo tiempo! Preocupada por todos los residuos plásticos que se encuentran en el medio ambiente, Carmela quiere revivir la práctica tradicional de utilizar papel reciclable para crear decoración. A medida que te cuidas, estarás cuidando de tu entorno a través de esta práctica cultural.

Arts Learning Lab @ Home: Wellbeing Through Artmaking

This May, we are thrilled to present three new Arts Learning Lab @ Home art-making workshops for families all around wellbeing and self-compassion. May is Mental Health Awareness month, and taking time for creativity together with loved ones is a key part of self-care in these uncertain times. We are partnering with WE RISE LA to bring these moments for creative growth to you, centered around the theme of wellbeing as we navigate coming out of a pandemic and transitioning to new routines together.

We will be providing Arts Learning Lab @ Home Art Kits with materials for each workshop that will be available for pick up from 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica, for those that live in the LA Metro area, but all materials will also be easily found at home or at a local supply store. More information on Art Kit pick-up will be provided once you register for a workshop. Supplies are limited.

All of the virtual workshops will be presented on Zoom, and interpretation will be provided in both English and Spanish.

Este mes de mayo, estamos encantados de presentar tres nuevos talleres del Laboratorio de Arte y Aprendizaje en Casa para las familias en torno al bienestar y la autocompasión. Mayo es el mes enfocado en la salud mental, y tomar tiempo para la creatividad con los seres queridos es una parte clave del autocuidado en estos tiempos inciertos. Nos asociamos con WE RISE LA para traerles estos momentos de crecimiento creativo, centrados en el tema del bienestar mientras navegamos la salida de una pandemia y transitamos juntos hacia nuevas rutinas.

Proporcionaremos kits de arte para el Laboratorio de Arte y Aprendizaje en Casa con materiales para cada taller que estarán disponibles para ser recogidos en 1639 18th Street, Santa Monica, para aquellos que viven en el condado de Los Ángeles, pero todos los materiales también se encontrarán fácilmente en casa o en una tienda de manualidades. Se le proporcionará más información sobre la recogida de los kits de arte una vez que se registre para un taller. Los suministros son limitados.
