Cultural Asset Mapping Trainings
Ongoing Project | Fall 2016
18th Street Arts Center invites you to collaborate with us in a community-created Cultural Asset Map celebrating our home and yours, the Pico Neighborhood. We think of cultural assets as people, places, events, and organizations recognized as cultural anchors within a specific community. This citizen-led mapping project, being created by and for the Pico Neighborhood, will culminate in a beautiful, fully accessible online website.
Our partner for this project, the Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA) will facilitate training workshops in volunteer mapping. Please come! ACTA has a successful record of creating culturally sensitive and meaningful cultural asset maps with diverse communities across Southern California. Map content collected by you through this community project will also be shared with local and national contemporary artists, working with 18th Street Arts Center, as inspiration for new and inventive art making initiatives involving Pico residents, Santa Monicans, and metro commuters.

What is a cultural asset map?
The cultural asset map will be an interactive, searchable online tool using GIS mapping to document and celebrate people and places of deep cultural value to Pico Neighborhood residents, friends, and allies.
Who are we seeking as asset map collectors?
18th Street is seeking 30-40 community volunteers to help identify and define what is of cultural significance in the neighborhood and to document these assets in the form of an online map.
What will the training consist of?
During the training, together we will collectively define a set of criteria for identifying and collecting cultural assets, and train you in the tools and strategies for documenting those assets through interviews, photography, and video.
What is the time commitment and timeline of the project?
Trainings will take place in June 2016. Asset collection will happen between June-August 2016, with 1-2 social gatherings planned in September to celebrate your mapping efforts and to present the assets you have collected.
Each volunteer will be encouraged to collect 3-5 assets for the map. 18th Street and ACTA will support volunteers with two follow-up meetings in late June and early July and a final convening to complete the process in August. Volunteers and cultural assets will be invited to share in community gatherings in September, where the collected information will be made available to the community for the first time. 18th Street and ACTA staff will be in communication with the volunteers throughout the entire process.

Los entrenamientos tomarán lugar el junio de 2016. Recopilación de los bienes será entre junio y agosto de 2016, con 1-2 reuniones sociales planeadas en septiembre para celebrar sus esfuerzos de mapeo y presentar los bienes que han recopilado.
Se animará a cada voluntario a recopilar 3-5 bienes para el mapa. 18th Street y ACTA apoyarán a los voluntarios con dos reuniones de seguimiento a finales de junio y principios de julio y una convocatoria final para completar el proceso en agosto. Se invitará a los voluntarios y a los bienes culturales a participar en reuniones de la comunidad en septiembre, donde se pondrá a disposición la información recopilada para la comunidad por primera vez. 18th Street y el personal de ACTA estarán en comunicación con los voluntarios a lo largo de todo el proceso.
