Stephen Lapthisophon

Stephen Lapthisophon lives and works in Dallas, Texas, after living in Chicago for the past 30 years. He received a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has also studied Comparative Literature and Theory at Northwestern University, and teaches at the University of Texas at Arlington. Lapthisophon is represented by Conduit Gallery in Dallas, and Zieher Smith Gallery in New York. His work can also be seen at Corbett vs. Dempsey in Chicago.

The scope of the artist’s work includes installation, drawings, video, sound art, essays and poetry.  Text and language are integral to Lapthisophon’s production. The artist’s published books include Hotel Terminus (2001)Writing Art Cinema 1977-2007, and Writing Art Cinema 1988-2010 He sites influence from Robert Smithson, Arte Povera, the Situationist International, the Frankfurt School, English Romanticism, and cooking.

Recently, Lapthisophon’s work has been shown at the Dallas Museum of Art in the Concentrations series exhibition Coffee, Seasonal Fruit, Root Vegetables and ‘Selected Poems’. In addition, he has exhibited work internationally in Berlin, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Malmo and Bourges France. His work has been collected by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Dallas Museum of Art. Lapthisophon’s Artist Residency at 18th Street will be his second visit to Los Angeles after spending time in 2013 showing work at Actual Size, Elephant and the Torrance Museum of Art.
