Putu Sutawijaya
Exhibition & Residency:
September 2015

Putu Sutawijaya (b. 1970, Indonesia) often focuses on bodies in motion and ambiguous landscapes that evoke an intimate form of mysticism. Working across paintings and sculptures the artist uses such spaces to reference a form of universal suffering, pain, fear, happiness, laughter and desire. This symbolic language aims at providing a contemplative entry point into the human soul.
Putu Sutawijaya graduated in 1998 from the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI), Yogyakarta. The artist is the recipient of the Phillip Morris Top 10 ASEAN Award, 1999 and the Best Fine Art Award from the Indonesian Art Institute Yogyakarta at the 11th Dies Natalis. In 2001 he was a resident artist at the Museum der Kulturen (Museum of Cultures), Basel, Switzerland.
