Taiwan-based artist Pei-Yu Lee has cycled through identities that have emerged from her experience working through different occupations. By becoming these iconic characters (Betel Nut Beauty, Life Drawing Model, Truck Hawker, Pottery Maker, and Artist), she finds a way to observe power and hierarchy in society. Through her performative and sculptural work, she places herself and her family contextually and makes connections to a broader civic culture. Lee has shown extensively throughout Taiwan and Southeast Asia. She graduated from Tainan University of Art.
Pei-Yu Lee’s residency was generously funded by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture and supported by Taiwan Academy.
