Mariana Castillo Deball

Mariana Castillo Deball (b. 1975, Mexico City) examines how objects’ cultural and functional significance changes over time. Castillo Deball studied at the Jan van Eyck Academie (2003), and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1997).

Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2014); CCA Glasgow (2013); Chisenhale Gallery, London (2013); Haus Konstruktiv, Zürich (2012); Museo Experimental El Eco, Mexico City (2011); Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach (2010); Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen (2009); Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (2006) and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2004). She has participated in significant international survey exhibitions including the 8th Berlin Biennale (2014); Documenta 13, Kassel (2013); 54th Venice Biennale (2011); 29th Bienal de São Paulo (2010) and Manifesta 7, Rovereto (2008). She was the recipient of the 2013 Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst, the 2012 Zürich Art Prize, the 2009 ars viva Prize and the 2004 Prix de Rome. She lives and works in Berlin.

This residency is supported by the Getty Foundation as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles taking place across Southern California from September 2017 through January 2018.
