Kamal Sabran, lives and works in the state of Perak in Malaysia. He is finishing his PhD in Art and Design (New Media) from the University of Teknologi MARA, and he currently teaches at University Sains Malaysia. His work is trans-disciplinary and exists at the intersection of art, science, and technology. Sabran’s practice includes experimental music, painting, video, performance, and electronic art installations.

Kamal’s work is collaborative and he frequently pursues opportunities with other artists, musicians, and scientists. Through a meaningful tenure at 18th Street Arts Center, Sabran will have the time and space for critical reflection and the opportunity for art-making genuinely informed by his experiences in a new cultural landscape. 18th Street’s history of collaboration in the production of LA’s tri-annual World Festival of Sacred Music informed the decision to select Sabran for this residency.

Sabran’s residency has been made possible by a grant through the Asian Cultural Council.
