Hyein Lee
Residency:
April 2 – 29, 2018

Korea-based artist Hyein Lee bases her work in intimate, reflective sketches from personal moments in everyday life. Though often reminiscent of traditional landscape painting, these deeply personal paintings are not intended to reproduce nature, but function as a thoughtful interior meditation on the experience of being located in those spaces and experiential contexts. Her painting methodology often leaps into amorphous sculptural forms and installation, but always takes subject and space as a catalyst for personal insight and possibly, revelation.

Lee held solo exhibitions including in Brain Factory (2011, Seoul), Daegu Art Museum (2013, Daegu, Korea), Doosan Gallery (2015, New York), Sophie’s Tree (2016, New York), and others. She participated in numerous group exhibitions in National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul), Ilmin Art Museum (Seoul), Incheon Art Platform (Incheon, Korea), Project Space Sarubia (Seoul), and many more. She participated in multiple residencies including MMCA Residency Goyang (Goyang, Korea), SeMA Nanji Residency (Seoul), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), and others. The artist won the Chong Geun Dang Art Award in 2012 and SINAP(Sindo Art Prize) in 2017. Lee received her BFA and MFA in Fine Arts in Seoul National University, in 2004 and 2007 accordingly.
