Hell Gette
Residency:
May 1 – 30, 2020
Hell Gette, born in Karabulak, Kazakhstan, now based in Munich, interweaves symbols of digital everyday life into her fantastic, garish picture subjects. Enraged emojis and cheerful symbols, empty speech bubbles and filled text fields hover in free association on beach scenes under the palms, integrated into brightly colored, paradisiac landscapes. Like painted adhesive elements, Gette’s work integrates the signs of digital advertising and pop culture, which combine to form a picture between painterly collage and trivial-aesthetic panel painting.
In 2018, Gette graduated with distinction in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under the instruction of Markus Oehlen, and received the Debutant Award of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts. Since 2014, Gette has exhibited in multiple group and solo exhibitions across Munich, Berlin, and other cities. She is featured in a german magazine, Art Magazine’s 2020 March issue as a “New Artist to Watch”. Gette’s work is included in the Hubert Burda Collection’s permanent collection.
