Heidi Schwegler
Exhibition & Residency:
February 1 – March 30, 2011

Heidi Schwegler’s focus has been to explore a wide range of media in the service of her ideas. In reaction to the celebrity culture we exist in, she is interested in making beautiful objects that deal with those private tragedies that make us distressingly aware of our own mortality. She engages notions of contradiction and systems that are in conflict. Oppositions are inextricably linked (birth/death, presence/absence, progress/destruction), it is a relationship in which one half cannot exist without the other. (It is through fully investing pathology that we can define what is normal).
Birth/presence/progress helps us define what death/absence/destruction is not, and the closer the two halves, the more stimulating their relationship. What separates the two? A closed boundary which causes one system to damage and possibly destroy the other? Or a gauzier membrane which allows for exchange, a blurring, an ambiguity. In any case, this collision is provocative, it produces friction which produces heat, tension, and energy.
