Buki Akib
Visiting Artist Residency:
November 1 – 29, 2019

Buki Akib is a native southerner from Lagos, Nigeria, who looks to explore the golden wonders of the African continent through its tradition, culture and spirituality. Combining both mediums of fashion and textile art, her trademark explores innovative usage of time honored methods of knitting with African artistry such as Yoruba hand woven Aso-oke. Akib is organically able to transcend this beautiful craftsmanship into art pieces.

Akib has exhibited internationally and nationally including exhibitions at the Weltkultren Museum, Frankfurt; Draftspace Gallery, New York; Urban Outfitter’s Bazar Launch, Los Angeles; Somerset House, London; and L’Oreal press show, London. Her work can been seen in numerous editorials and articles such as Arise, The Guardian, Schon, Dazed, and publications such as “New African Fashion” by Helen Jennings and “Making African” by Vitra Museum. Buki studied design at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London.
