Bibi Katholm: Micro Castle # Westwood vs Harmony, 2014, 80 x 100 cm, mix media collage incl. fabrics, acrylic and gouache on canvas.

Bibi Katholm (b. 1977, Denmark) has an MA Painting degree from Royal College of Art in London. Shortly after graduating she moved to Copenhagen and had her first major solo exhibition with VENUE Contemporary Art Gallery in November 2008. Since then she has travelled extensively while exhibiting her work and curating exhibitions internationally.

Bibi Katholm’s work is characterized by an expanded approach to painting resulting in various mix media experiments and driven by a constant curiosity about materiality and recycling. Fabrics and patterns, wood and fur, props and found objects – all of these materials have found their way into paintings and drawings creating an overall impression of inclusion or openness.

Through moving image/animation work she has investigated the duration or continuum lacking in traditional painting. Objects and installations are staged with the purpose of expanding a narrative in time and space. It all becomes collage. Slippage and layers. Movement and gestures.

Fragments of narrative accumulate and form their own kind of logic. Patterns repeat or break down. The boundary between paint and fabric is erased, then revealed. Painting becomes more than painting. It tells the story of what it means to create an image and what specific limitations the painter has to respect or go beyond in order to create something new.
