Reception: Saturday, October 17, 7-10pm
Resident artist Yvette Gellis’ project entitled, Aqueous/Igneous is a continued investigation and outgrowth of her practice as a painter. By expanding the idea of taking painting into a three-dimensional space and challenging the distinctions between installation, painting and environment she is able to resist the constraints of the spatial limitation of the canvas, and redesign the work within the given space.

Jazz Moods II
About The Work
Jazz Moods II is a collection of work visualizing Koton’s lifelong commitment to Jazz. Inspired by Francis Woolf’s black and white photographs that adorned many of the Blue Note records purchased by Koton, his portraits of live jazz, shot in the Los Angeles area over the last ten years, share with us the passion and creativity of dedicated jazz artists. Mesmerized by live performances by musicians like Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Rahsaan Roland, and Kirk and Pharoah Sanders...

About The Work
La Palabra de Los Ninos (The Voice of the Children) is Koehler’s collection of work that spans the globe from Honduras to the West Indies, Cuba to Mexico, and also includes Zambia. This current body of work is an exploration of various impoverished children who are not only connected by latitudinal region, but by the similar struggles they face. Amongst other things, Ms. Koehler has recently concentrated on children that have become orphaned due to the HIV/AIDS virus that has been growing within these developing countries.

RAUL BALTAZAR
2009 Santa Monica Latino Community Access Participation Project
Grant Recipient
and his class from Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center will present
It Takes More Than Balls, inter active, mixed media sculpture, 2009
Lead artist Raul Paulino Baltazar recipient of the 2009 Latino CAP Grant, worked over the past few months with artists Edgar Andres, Daniel Andres, Crystal Andres, Angel Villanova, Julian Ayala, Paul Daniels, and father Raul Torres Baltazar Sr. and Arnoldo Magana at Virginia Avenue Teen Center.
Mr. Baltazar has been leading a sculpture workshop where students learned design, how to use power tools and how to create a “sculpture”. Baltazar is interested in creating complex sculptural systems through surprisingly simple and often recycled means. Lawn sculptures, aluminum studs, wood studs, astro turf, casters and pulleys are among some of the mixed media included. He is hybridizing games like futbolito/ fuzz ball, pin ball, miniature golf, and carnival games with fine art sculpture inspirations such as Tim Hawkinson, Jason Rhodes and Ruben Ochoa. The biggest obstacle has been to create an art piece that thrives on the razor’s edge between fine art and a device for a game.

The HIGH PERFORMANCE (C)ART
The High Performance (C)Art is a mobile, interactive portal into the pages of High Performance Magazine. The HIGH PERFORMANCE (C)ART‘s mission is to go directly to the streets providing uniques art experiences reflecting the multiplicity of visions and perspectives found in the pages of High Performance Magazine.
High Performance was a quarterly arts magazine founded in 1978 and published until 1997. Its editorial mission was to provide support and a critical context for new, innovative and unrecognized work in the arts. It was also the first magazine to focus on the then nascent form of “Performance Art”. Over the years High Performance was a leader in viewing the arts in the larger context of contemporary life, examining how the arts contribute in addressing social and cultural concerns, and also how those concerns impact the arts. High Performance was published by Astro Artz which later became The 18th Street Art Center.
Performance Art Karaoke: Using the original 1983 vinyl pressing/record album HIGH PERFORMANCE, participants can “perform” the songs of their favorite performance artists including Paul McCarthy, The Kipper Kids, The Dark Bob, Linda Burnham and Jacki Apple, or perform selections from the magazine.

Curated by Clayton Campbell
War as a Way of Life, concludes our four part series, The Future of Nations, a year long conversation about important election year issues. Presenting a stellar group of international and Californian visual artists, War As a Way of Life examines the phenomenology of how people who are exposed to long term effects of war or conflict are transformed. Using photography, video, mixed media, and painting, the artists look at how war which is either abroad, in our own neighborhoods, or even in our families, is affecting future generations perceptions of themselves and their communities.
