On Thursday, January 20, from 7:30pm – 9:30pm, 18th Street Arts Center will debut its groundbreaking exhibition for 2011, Postcards from Tehran. For the first time in Los Angeles, 18th Street Arts Center will bring to the public an all Iranian artist show that features the dissenting viewpoints of nine contemporary Iranian artists. Both political and prosaic, Postcards from Tehran, will be a revelation to a national American public whose main knowledge about Iran is derived from corporate cable news channels. The artists participating in this show are: Ala Ebtekar, Arash Fayez, Siamak Filizadeh, Barbad Golshiri, Behnam Kamrani, Amitis Motevalli, Hadi Nasiri, Behrang Samadzadeghan, and Jinoos Taghizadeh. They are joined in this collaboration by Iranian-American artists, Ala Ebtekar and Amitis Motevalli, both well-known West Coast visual artists.

18TH STREET KICKS OFF INTERNATIONAL MONTH

MLu Zondi, Despotica, video still, 18 minute video & performance, 2010

For 18th Street’s major art opening on January 20, four of its Visiting Artists will activate the 18th Street Gallery, the Pasillos and the Project Room for the entire month of January. Past visiting artist, Ala Ebtekar (Iran) is part of the Postcards of Tehran group show opening in the 18th Gallery. Current visiting artist from South Africa, MLu Zondi, is presenting videos of his performance art work in the Project Room; his works consist of visual art, contemporary dance, acting and poetry with strong political contexts. Tibetan artists, Nyandak Tsering and Nortse will debut all new and original works, created during their residency at 18th Street. The final presentation for International Month will be the unveiling of a dynamic mural on the front of the 18th Street Arts Center. The mural is entitled, Open Water, which was created in collaboration by current visiting artist, Han Sungpil (Korea) and long-term 18th Street artist-in-residence, Yvette Gellis.

LEGACY SHOW COMING SOON…

18th Street’s upcoming 2011 exhibition, Legacy, organized in conjunction with the monumental art collaboration, Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980 is opening March 5, 6:00pm – 9:00pm. 18th Street Arts Center has chosen four Artists Fellows to activate the 18th Street Gallery and Project Room, and address basic questions about how artistic legacy is passed down and whether or not ephemeral, performative and media based work can be re-performed and re-envisioned by the authors themselves or by new generations of artists. Beginning February 1 through August 30, artists Jerri Allyn, Richard Newton, Vincent Ramos, and York Chang will have an opportunity to take over one of the galleries for a three-month residency at 18th Street and receive a project grant and exhibition.

GEARING UP FOR THE 2011 LA MARATHON

Its that time of year again. 18th Street Arts Center and its adventurous artists will once again join hundreds of Los Angelinos in the LA Marathon on March 20, 2011. Sponsoring several artists to run in Marathon on 18th Street’s behalf has become an annual super-fun-raiser.

This year 18th Street’s Resident Artist, Karl Doerrer-Attaway, is the first artist on our team to represent the organization, gaining sponsorships with every step. But since 18th Street adheres to the old adage, “The more, the merrier” we would like to invite you or any other artists you might know to join our team in running/walking the marathon. We would like to have up to 4 artists running on our team. Please contact Development Associate, Nicole Gordillo at ngordillo@18thstreet.org if you or a friend might be interested in being one of 18th Street’s sponsored runners.

Since arriving at 18th Street Arts Center in November, Korean Visiting Artist, Han Sungpil’s residency has been an experience of enlightenment and realization thus far. Before coming to Los Angeles, Sungpil did not expect much from the LA art scene. He states that in Korea, the majority of contemporary art from America comes from the New York art scene. During his residency, he was excited to discover that despite his assumptions, LA’s contemporary art is much stronger and more dynamic than he expected. In addition to this discovery, Sungpil claims his current collaboration with LA based painter Yvette Gellis, to create an installation mural in front of 18th Street, has inspired his own artwork.  Known for his massive wrapping installations, Sungpil says that before coming to 18th Street he never collaborated on projects with other artists and that working with Gellis has allowed him to experience and challenge his own art practice in innovative ways. Recently, Sungpil has taken on a second project that involves him exploring and researching Los Angeles’ surfing culture for a future exhibition he plans to do.

We are pleased to announce that 18th Street has received two new grants from the Africa Centre of Capetown and the Getty Foundation. We were also awarded $15,000 by The Getty Foundation to fund Artist-in-Residence, Lita Albuquerque’s project for Pacific Standard Time.

OPENING EXHIBITIONS FOR JANUARY 2011

Iran

18th Street Arts Center is proud to present three exhibitions highlighting our award-winning International Visiting Artist Program. Beginning January 7- 28, 18th Street will host an “International Month,” which features exhibitions from Iran, Tibet and South Africa, The public reception for these exhibitions will be held on Thursday, January 20, 7:30-9:30 pm

In the main gallery we are proud to present a provocative and groundbreaking exhibit, Postcards from Tehran, a collaboration with the Aaran Gallery of Tehran, Iran, curated by Nazilla Noebashari. The show breaks down the barriers of political prejudice to exhibit for the first time in Los Angeles the work of 5 Iranian artists, and 2 artists from California who migrated from Iran. Both political and prosaic, Postcards from Tehran is a unique view of contemporary artists from Iran whose dissenting viewpoints will be a revelation to a national American public whose main knowledge about Iran is derived from corporate cable news channels.

In two firsts for 18th Street, we will be showing in our Pasillos Gallery the paintings of our current Tibetan artists in residence, Tsering Nyandak and Norbu Tsering (Nortse). American audiences are familiar with conventional notions of Tibetan art, but now they will have the opportunity to experience the vibrant new representational narrative paintings coming out of Tibet’s contemporary art community.

And in the second first, the Africa Centre of Capetown, South Africa is sponsoring a two-month residency for visual and performance artist MLU Zondi. Mr. Zondi’s provocative performance videos will be on display in the Project Room. Stay tuned for an announcement of the live performance presented by Mr. Zondi in the 18th Street Project Room.

Groups of past artists, friends, and 18th Street supporters filed into Fox’s spacious studio to view the installations of his and past Australian artists’ work and also to commemorate the legacy of exceptional Australian artists at 18th Street. By the end of the night, Fox’s studio became a full-out artist party with funky tunes spun by an in-house DJ and enough Aussie-style BBQ on the grill to serve the whole complex.

We recently sent out our year-end letter. Thank you if you already responded.

Since
then, we have received $7,334.00 in cash contributions, and $5,000 in in-kind donations. Our goal  is  to reach $14,000 to  make ends meet. This year, more than ever 18th Street has to rely heavily on
individual donations to succeed.

If you have ever thought about making a donation to 18th Street Arts Center, now is a great time.

When you support 18th Street, you are directly supporting an essential
part of the arts ecology – The ARTISTS.
A priority in all of our programming goes to paying artist stipends during their residencies and exhibitions.

When you support
18th Street you help cultivate new art lovers that understand and appreciate

the role contemporary art plays in transforming society. Equally important to our reason for being is the cultivation of contemporary art appreciators. Hosting dozens of dynamic public events throughout the year  and partnering with many other organizations in the process is the best way to engage the public.

Your support is important to us. By making a special, tax-deductible gift to 18th Street
Arts Center today your contribution will support over 100 artists
and small arts organizations this coming year.

We appreciate your friendship and look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

Warm regards,

Jan Williamson

Executive Director
