| LEGACY SHOW COMING SOON… |
|
18th Street’s upcoming 2011 exhibition, Legacy, organized in conjunction with the monumental art collaboration, Pacific Standard Time: Art in LA 1945-1980 is opening March 5, 6:00pm – 9:00pm. 18th Street Arts Center has chosen four Artists Fellows to activate the 18th Street Gallery and Project Room, and address basic questions about how artistic legacy is passed down and whether or not ephemeral, performative and media based work can be re-performed and re-envisioned by the authors themselves or by new generations of artists. Beginning February 1 through August 30, artists Jerri Allyn, Richard Newton, Vincent Ramos, and York Chang will have an opportunity to take over one of the galleries for a three-month residency at 18th Street and receive a project grant and exhibition. |
| GEARING UP FOR THE 2011 LA MARATHON |
|
Its that time of year again. 18th Street Arts Center and its adventurous artists will once again join hundreds of Los Angelinos in the LA Marathon on March 20, 2011. Sponsoring several artists to run in Marathon on 18th Street’s behalf has become an annual super-fun-raiser. This year 18th Street’s Resident Artist, Karl Doerrer-Attaway, is the first artist on our team to represent the organization, gaining sponsorships with every step. But since 18th Street adheres to the old adage, “The more, the merrier” we would like to invite you or any other artists you might know to join our team in running/walking the marathon. We would like to have up to 4 artists running on our team. Please contact Development Associate, Nicole Gordillo at ngordillo@18thstreet.org if you or a friend might be interested in being one of 18th Street’s sponsored runners. |

![]() Light of Magritte, Chromogenic Print of Digital print building “wrap”, 69" x 93", 2009 Since arriving at 18th Street Arts Center in November, Korean Visiting Artist, Han Sungpil’s residency has been an experience of enlightenment and realization thus far. Before coming to Los Angeles, Sungpil did not expect much from the LA art scene. He states that in Korea, the majority of contemporary art from America comes from the New York art scene. During his residency, he was excited to discover that despite his assumptions, LA’s contemporary art is much stronger and more dynamic than he expected. In addition to this discovery, Sungpil claims his current collaboration with LA based painter Yvette Gellis, to create an installation mural in front of 18th Street, has inspired his own artwork. Known for his massive wrapping installations, Sungpil says that before coming to 18th Street he never collaborated on projects with other artists and that working with Gellis has allowed him to experience and challenge his own art practice in innovative ways. Recently, Sungpil has taken on a second project that involves him exploring and researching Los Angeles’ surfing culture for a future exhibition he plans to do. |

Beginning January 7- 28, 18th Street will host an “International Month,” which features exhibitions from Iran, Tibet and South Africa, The public reception for these exhibitions will be held on Thursday, January 20, 7:30-9:30 pm In the main gallery we are proud to present a provocative and groundbreaking exhibit, Postcards from Tehran, a collaboration with the Aaran Gallery of Tehran, Iran, curated by Nazilla Noebashari. The show breaks down the barriers of political prejudice to exhibit for the first time in Los Angeles the work of 5 Iranian artists, and 2 artists from California who migrated from Iran. Both political and prosaic, Postcards from Tehran is a unique view of contemporary artists from Iran whose dissenting viewpoints will be a revelation to a national American public whose main knowledge about Iran is derived from corporate cable news channels. In two firsts for 18th Street, we will be showing in our Pasillos Gallery the paintings of our current Tibetan artists in residence, Tsering Nyandak and Norbu Tsering (Nortse). American audiences are familiar with conventional notions of Tibetan art, but now they will have the opportunity to experience the vibrant new representational narrative paintings coming out of Tibet’s contemporary art community. And in the second first, the Africa Centre of Capetown, South Africa is sponsoring a two-month residency for visual and performance artist MLU Zondi. Mr. Zondi’s provocative performance videos will be on display in the Project Room. Stay tuned for an announcement of the live performance presented by Mr. Zondi in the 18th Street Project Room. |
