Scarlett Rouge, multi-medium artist based out of Los Angeles and Paris, has shown at Track 16 in Santa Monica and Antebellum Gallery in Hollywood, and has a permanent installation at Owenscorp in Paris and recently had a solo show at the Palais Bourbon in Paris. Sex, God, and Webcams is a performance/installation piece by Scarlett Rouge that deals with human rights issues and the thinning line between privacy and publicity. First, the right for one human to bond to another, commonly called marriage. Today, gay marriage is a legal issue, when in reality, the denial of their bond of love, is a denial of their inherent humanity. Secondly, the right for a woman to have ownership of her own body, as in the instance of abortion.The web is filled with bloodless pornography and exposure, but is really freedom of expression? Or is it the expression of repression?Humans need for privacy and intimacy is being obliterated by our obsession and demand for 15minutes of fame. No one can see the whole truth or if the internet culture is a potential threat to intimacy. In Sex, God, and Webcams, Scarlett Rouge attempts to give us a peek behind the screen. And asks if there will be a day when the touch of another human being is replaced by a touch screen? The installation is composed of two rooms constructed within the gallery. In a closet room, a gay princess bride is wrapped in bondage as he waits to be rescued by his prince. He is only seen through a crack in the door, while his inner desires are revealed via video and audio through a peephole. In the another room, slutty “good girls” humiliate feminism while provocatively broadcasting themselves live on the world wide web. A video projection of the video chat room website allows the viewers to see what is happening in the room. However, they can also see what is not revealed online again through the use of peepholes.
