Visiting Artist Residency:
April 1 – 29, 2017
Carey Hamblett is a visual artist and filmmaker with an extensive background in television, theater, and visual arts. Born in England, her formative years were spent in Santa Monica. Returning to London as a young adult, she studied theater design and fine art at Wimbledon School of Art and was awarded a David Murray Landscape Scholarship. She began her career designing costumes and masks for theater. Drawn to work with the moving image she went on to post-graduate studies at the London Film School. She entered the television industry at the BBC, moving into production management for independent companies on prestige rock music programs. Her passion for the environment led to directing, and she directed the concert video Eco Rock. She has lectured in screen-writing at Brighton Film School and leads creative script workshops combining theater ensemble and cinema theory. Her visual arts practice encompasses character design, storyboarding, and works on canvas.
Return visits to the west coast have generated LA ENVIRONS, a trine of projects addressing sense of place and challenging her to extend her craft. LA EDGE is a multi-media installation including photographs, a videowall, and soundscape. SPIRIT of the MOUNTAINS is a series of sixteen mixed media works on canvas and paper evoking primal earth energy carried out in the studio and on the mountainside. Finally, sequences from the PCH-1 documentary chronicle a childhood lived on that highway.
