We are proud to renew our affiliation again with the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme. Each year, we focus on one country or region for the bursary. For 2009, we will accept applications only from Iranian artists.

A UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary to the 18th Street Arts Center provides:

  • roundtrip airfare between the artist’s nearest international airport and Los Angeles, California;
  • a two-month stay at 18th Street Arts Center, including:
  • a fully furnished 1000 square foot studio and apartment with bed room, kitchen, all linens and towels, internet, television, and local phone.
  • A monthly stipend of $1200
  • logistical support for the execution of the artist’s intentions

18th Street provides artists the time and space to produce new work and to interact with the artistic community of Los Angeles. The artist is responsible for his or her own working materials and any additional personal expenses (local transportation, purchase of food, etc.) for the duration of the residency.

We expect the selected artist to be available to conduct a studio tour, make an artist talk, and perhaps to visit local schools. At this particular moment of political tension between the United States and Iran, we are seeking an artist who wishes to build bridges of understanding between our two countries through their art, and will be open and willing to discuss current trends, ideas, and cultural issues in Iran.

18th Street will award one bursary in 2009. The Bursary will be awarded in the visual arts.  We interpret visual arts in the broadest terms possible: painting, sculpture, handicrafts, printmaking, photography, ceramics, film, video, installation, etc.

There are certain restrictions for artists who wish to apply for a Bursary to 18th Street through the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary Programme.  To be eligible to apply for the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary to the 18th Street Arts Center, applicants must:

• Be between 25 - 35 years old
• Be born in Iran and maintain a strong connection to contemporary Iranian culture

There is no application or registration fee.  Applications must be received at the 18th Street office in Los Angeles no later than November 15, 2008.  Applications will be returned only if they have a self addressed, stamped envelope included.

The one residency will take place in Los Angeles in the second half of 2009, the dates to be negotiated with the selected artist.
