What can cultural institutions offer in an economic climate in which people need food, housing, and health care?

1. Do cultural organizations have responsibilities to address social issues such as class, ethnicity, gender, and politics?  Why? How?

Who are the audiences for cultural institutions? What audiences do they serve? Which should they serve?
Should cultural organizations be conveners for community concerns?
How do organizations navigate between global cultural forces and local community interests?

2. Can a cultural organization impact the life of the community in a meaningful way? And if so, how?

How should the changes in cultural production and social participation and engagement inform the practices of cultural institutions?
What examples are to be learned from art students and art schools?
What are the opportunities for art students and schools?
What is the responsibility of cultural organizations to support local artists?
Are there opportunities for artists working outside the mainstream?

3. What are the roles for artists within cultural organizations?  Should artistic programs be determined only by curators and directors?

What are the exemplars of socially engaged practice in Los Angeles today?
Who are the audiences for cultural organizations and who should they be?
Are the arts designed to serve middle and upper class arts consumers and practitioners?
Should cultural organizations be spaces for diverse contexts and multiple narratives?
What are the missteps and misunderstandings of cultural organizations? How can they be addressed?
