18TH STREET IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THEIR 2010 ARTIST WINNERS
FOR: STATUS REPORT: CREATIVE ECONOMY |
 |
18th Street is pleased to announce the California artist winners of its eight theme-based residencies for it’s 2010 artist residency program. The awards include a three month residency in our galleries, grants between $2500 and $5000, and a public presentation of their work. The eight Fellows of the 2010 artist Residency-program include: Robert Sain, Andrea Bowers, Martin Durazo, Elena Siff, Dorit Cypis, Ana Guajardo, Carla Herrera-Prats and Matthias Hess.
Residency proposals were chosen that look at new methods of research and artistic production while relating to 18th Street’s mission “to provoke public dialogue through contemporary art making.” 18th Street is an artist community which values art making as an essential component of a vibrant, just and healthy society.

The TMU award of $20,000 will support the residencies of two Polish visual artists, Kasia Krakowiak and Maciek Stepinkski. As part of 18th Street’s on-going New Media Project for Eastern European artists, both Krakowiak and Stepinksi will work with new media projects in the Los Angeles arts community. They will be in residence February through May of 2010.
The ACC award of $14,000 will support the residency of Korean visual artist Oak, Jung ho. Jung ho will be at 18th Street in January and February of 2010. He will explore various new strategies for his public practice which involves interventions in the urban landscape.
At a recent convening of Grantsmakers in the Arts, 18th Street Artistic Director attended a round table conversation about international funding, hosted by TMU’s Carrie Thompson and ACC’s Margaret Cogswell. It was clear that at a time when the United States lags far behind other developed countries in its funding of international cultural exchange, TMU and ACC remain leaders in international funding for artists. We wish to to recognize TMU and ACC for their outstanding contributions to the field of arts and culture over many years. |
